Dubbed the "Batmobile", Danny Ongais' 1981 Interscope is a fan favorite to this day. Financed by Interscope Records owner Ted Field, the sleek black car was leading early in the race when a 46 second pit stop dealt a major setback to the team. After exiting the pits and coming up on a slower car on the back stretch, Ongais made an ill-advised and late dive to pass the car going into turn three. He carried too much speed into the turn, the car started drifting and sliding. Ongais corrected by turning right at which point the traction kicked in sending the car nearly head on into the wall at full speed. Legs broken and suffering a concussion Ongais was cut from the car in serious condition, but recovered to race the following year. One year later Gordon Smiley would lose his life in a nearly identical crash in exactly the same spot.
